Internship Info :

REQUIREMENTS:
This is an un-paid (neither I or you pay each other) Internship as a Teaching Assistant for those who want to gain experience in teaching and possibly be in my performance group. This is for people who are already experience in at least one form of dance (Hip Hop, Latin, and/or Indian). Any age is welcome but over age 21 is preffered so you can go on the optional club night out with the students. My current interns are all in their early to late 20's. If you are not sure of your dance level, I've made a video talking about what we do in class, which you should check out. If you can at least do all the body isolations (body rolls, chest circles, etc.in the video) then your level is probably good enough to assistant teach. If you're not sure of your level or if you want to come to the studio and meet me please email me at aminavohra@gmail.com and we'll arrange a date and time. However, PLEASE NOTE that you should never just drop by the studio as I rent it only Tues., Wed., and Thurs., 7:30 to 9:30 and other people rent it in the morning and afternoons so I'm not always there. To sign up please scroll down and fill out and email me back the Internship Form (text in red) and also read hte Benefits and Duties listed below.

BENEFITS:
1.) You will learn the art of teaching dance in a low pressure environment though teaching your own choreographies (if you want), or just shadowing myself and the other assitant teachers and helping to go around and correct the students.

2.)Get to meet a lot of new people (i.e. me, the students, and other assistant teachers), plus you'll get a good work out!

3.)Your pic, bio, and videos go on the website. This becomes like a public resume page for you that you can send to anyone. For example you can check out one of the current interns, Nefertena's page, at the bottom of her page you can see the link to her video that I made for her one day after class. The other current assistant teacher/interns pages are at the about us page if you're curious to check them out.

4 .) Since the class is a Fusion of Hip Hop, Indian Dance, Latin Dance, and once in a while some glow sticks, you may even be learning some new steps or techniques.

5.) You may be able to receive academic credit for this, if I need to fill out forms for you for this I would be happy to. Also, if ever need a letter of recommendation for a job or college application I would be happy to give you one! (Provided you come to the classes and help out of course!)

4.) You will receive possible performance and choreography opportunities. Because I run a dance school, I have been requested to have my group performances taped for independent films and to have my dance teams try out for MTV. (I didn't take them up on their offers because I wasn't ready for them with a group at the time but I am constantly being asked to perform at places with my group including at the Ujena Model Search Competition on July 19.) As a solo dance artist I have been in an indy music video and 2 independent films as bollywood dancer, bellydancer, and a hip hop dancer. I also get requests for my dance school members to be extras in movies including the movie that recently came out, Step up 2. The dance school even got on Fox 5 news last summer! There are soo many opportunities I run across and want to share with my interns. If I feel that you are ready, and if I have performances coming up, the most talented interns will be placed in the group dances sponsored by Amina's Dance School. I lead the group and choreograph. I am always open to the assistant teachers choreography as well so it's also an opportunity for you to choreograph something for a show. Final choreography decisions will be made by me or by vote. The benefit of being in these dances is fun, fitness, possible media exposure, learning new steps, and getting experience as a choreographer and choreographing in a team. When we have team dance practice it is always Tues., Wed., and/or Thurs. 9:30 to around 11pm (and sometimes ending later closer to the show) so make sure this is a good time for you before you join as a performer. Practice is usually 9:30 to 10:30 and afterwards we all clean the studio floor and bathroom (this is because I don't own the studio, I rent it and it's part of my agreement). Only dance team members have to help clean. Teaching interns do not have to help clean but if they offer I will accept the offer! If you are curious, check out the performance video page.

5.) The best teachers will have possible opportunities to teach on their own (or 2 at a time) for Amina's Dance School as full time teachers or as subs once I feel that they are ready. Interns that act as substitute teachers for Amina will be paid.

DUTIES:

1.) Come at least once a week Tues., Wed., and/or Thurs. or all 3 nights from 7:30pm until 9:10pm. The next session dates are on the classes page.

2.) Help out in class in the Body Isolations, Hip Hop, Latin, and/or Indian Portion (whichever portions you have experience in): Meaning if I'm teaching body rolls, and I say assistants can you check everyone, then you go around and check each person and make sure they are doing it right and help see what they are doing wrong. Or if I'm teaching and you see just one or two people are confused, then you would go around and help those one or two people. Also, class ends at 9pm but there is extra help from 9 to 9:10 so assistants are asked to stay until 9:10 if possible.

3 .) Coming on time is nice too. If you can't, no big deal, I know dance is not your whole life! However if you can respond to my emails and cell phone calls (if I do contact you about something) somewhat promptely that would be very helpful, even if you just email or text me to say "got it".

4 .) If I ever have to miss class, the interns will be teaching on their own so try and remember the class style and format. Correcting students and keeping them moving even if you're talking to them at the same time is key since they should never just be standing around and waiting. Also joking with them is great, and talking loudly, because if they can't hear you over the music that's no good. The music can't be too too loud though because there is an SAT testing center next door. Also if you want to teach them easy/fun choreography or easy/fun freestyle moves they can do at the clubs that is awesome, just run it by me after class so I can make sure it's the right level for them. And don't worry there is touching in any of the moves in class.

5 .) If you are good at hip hop, or good at Latin, or good at Indian, then let me know and I'll give you 20 min. each class or on certain classes to do your thing (i.e. teach freestyle moves or choreography) and I'll just help out in the background. If you feel that you remember the warm up and would like to lead the warm up yourself one day then let me know and if I feel you're ready it's fine by me.

OPTIONAL DUTIES:
1.) Coming to the optional club night out to help the students feel comfortable dancing would be awesome if you can.

2.) If you can help promote the class it would be great. This would give you experience in marketing and advertising if that is something you're interested in. All classes are for beginner adults ages 18 and over and co-ed (average age 20 to 50). If you email your friends the site they can see the classes page and sign up on there. I'll return $10 to your friends in class if they email me after they sign up that they are your friend! :-)

3 .) I clean the studio after class so that I have the optoin of keeping the studio until after my rent time ends so that I can use it for the troupe practice. If you want to stay and help clean that's awesome, if you can't that's cool too!
